What is Select Registry? Ohio Bed and Breakfast explains

Many of our guests at Whispering Pines Bed and Breakfast have never heard of Select Registry.  We are honored to be a member since 2006.  At this time there are only eight Inns in Ohio.  I thought I would give an explanation as to what it is all about.  We give each of our guests a Select Registry directory book to take home with them to use as a reference for a future getaway.

What is Select Registry, Distinguished Inns of North America?

The association was founded in the late 1960’s by Norman Simpson, the “father of Country Inn travel in American”. In his pioneering book, “Country Inns and Back Roads”, Simpson noted that each member inn is original and unique, a reflection of the personalities and tastes of the individual innkeeper-owners. This was never intended to be a total guide to country inns in the United Stated and Canada, but rather a carefully selected group in inns or bed and breakfasts. The purpose was to encourage travelers to visit and to experience this unique type of personal hospitality. When Norman Simpson first compiled a directory of inns, there were twelve properties, primarily in the New England area. Today they represent nearly 400 of the finest country inns, bed and breakfasts, and unique small hotels from the United States and Canada – the very best the travel industry has to offer.

Select Registry carries out a quality assurance inspection for each of its nearly 400 inns. This program involves independent inspectors – not employees of Select Registry – with years of experience in the hospitality industry. The inspectors arrive unidentified, spend the night, and evaluate the inn on a detailed point system, which translates into a pass/fail grade for the inn. Inns applying for membership are inspected, as are existing members on a periodic schedule. Not all inns have what it takes to pass the inspections, and this process provides a guarantee to the traveling public that a Select Registry inn is in a class of its own. A recent internet directory identified over 20,000 country inns and bed and breakfasts in the United States and Canada. A select few of those are members of the Select Registry.

THE QUILL

What is the meaning of the Select Registry Quill?

The historical registry ‘Quill’ is the original instrument of guest registration and has been incorporated into our association’s graphic identity. You’ll find the symbol in the guide book, carved into our coffee mugs, printed on our wine glasses, embroidered on our robes and on all printed and web material. It is a brand you can count on when you see it.

Love Story at romantic Whispering Pines Bed & Breakfast on Atwood Lake - Ohio

Sometimes we get a request from a gentleman who is very romantic and creative. This year for Valentine’s Day we found ourselves accommodating a very special request. Mark ordered 1 dozen white calla lilies and 2 stems of purple orchids, each stem having 8 flowers. When he and his wife were out to dinner, I removed each orchid from its stem and then arrange a pattern of a heart on top of the bed using the calla lilies and the orchids. I decorated the heart with baby’s breath and greens from the florist. It really looked nice. He also dropped off a bottle of their favorite wine they enjoyed in 2 wine glasses etched with ‘Whispering Pines’. The wine glasses were purchased as a memento of their evening. They did not have dessert at the restaurant, instead dessert at Whispering Pines – Mark ordered a cheese and cracker tray with lots of fresh grapes and chocolate truffles. When they returned, the lights were low, the fireplace was on and soft romantic music was playing in the background. Lisa was absolutely dazzled!

At Whispering Pines we have created several add on romantic packages to choose from. But if you have your own idea I will be happy to help you customize your plans.

Do you have a memorable Valentine’s Day you would like to share?

Corn Bread Recipe from Whispering Pines Bed and Breakfast

For years I have been searching for a corn bread recipe that reminds my husband of his childhood memories. Well move over Paula, but I recently discovered Bill’s Aunt Leota’s recipe tucked into a very old cookbook. Bill was ecstatic – this is the corn bread he always talked about.

Yesterday was another snow day at Whispering Pines Bed & Breakfast, so I secretly got all the ingredients together and surprised Bill with warm corn bread, soft whipped butter and pure untreated honey that we buy from a local producer. He savoured every bite as we enjoyed the falling snow over Atwood Lake.

I thought I would share this old recipe with you. The only change I made was using butter instead of Crisco. I hope you have a chance to make this and to let me know your comments.

Sift together in a large bowl:

1 c. flour
1 c. corn meal
1/2 c. sugar
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1-1/2 tsp. baking powder

Add:

1 c. buttermilk
3 T. butter, melted and cooled
1 egg, slightly beaten

Mix until just combined.  Pour into an 8 x 8 buttered pan and bake for 25 minutes at 375.

Happy eating!

Linda
