Battle of Magicians-Canton, Ohio

I just came across an event taking place in Canton, Ohio on May 1st and May 2nd that I think sounds very exciting.  Who doesn't love to see magic, young or old?

Live on stage at Canton's Palace Theater, this year’s show promises to be one of the best ever with some of the most exciting and hilarious acts in the world.  This spectacular, once in a lifetime show, is where Las Vegas quality entertainment comes to Canton.

There will be six acts:

Jeff Hobson is known as the Hilarious Host of Las Vegas. Jeff is one of the most in-demand comedy magicians working today.

Mark Kalin & Jinger Leigh are respected around the world as powerful performers and creative trend setting producers.

Woody Pittman is a full time comedy magician from Hollywood.

Tim Wright’s (a.k.a. Skilldini) stage presence and enthusiasm have escalated him to one of the most sought after magicians in the country.

Simultaneously intelligent and wacky, Billy Bob Steinberg’s show draws on his background in stand-up and musical comedy theatre, circus arts and magic.

The sixth act this year will be a special treat. A super surprise guest act, which promises to captivate the Palace Theatre audience.

To find out more about the individual acts, visit the online  http:www.battleofmagicians.com

Tickets are $25 each.  However, combine this show with an overnight stay at Whispering Pines Bed and Breakfast overlooking beautiful Atwood Lake where the flowers are blooming, and we will pay for one (1) ticket to this magical show.  Don't wait too long because tickets are going fast.

Art Downtown Canton, Ohio

The other day we decided to take the afternoon off and visit the ‘Joseph Saxton Gallery of Photography' in downtown Canton, Ohio. So glad we did, because we had the pleasure of viewing a special exhibit of National Geographic Photographer Steve McCurry. I believe there were over 50 prints showcasing his extraordinary eye. He has traveled the world to faraway places that most of us will never visit. He studies the people in these places poised in the landscape of the country. Really a visual education. Next month, the Joseph Saxton Gallery will be presenting an exhibit called ‘Wilderness Visions’ by Clyde Butcher and he will be at the gallery in person on May 7th. We’ll make sure we take another day off to see his work.

There are many other galleries to visit as well and we enjoyed going through them. The ‘2nd April galerie’ is the hub of the arts explosion. There are three different levels of art to explore and many of the artist’s studios are upstairs. You can definitely make a purchase for yourself or for a special gift.

Stay overnight in one of our beautiful romantic guest rooms and enjoy an Ohio weekend getaway. Spend an afternoon in Canton and have lunch at one of the many outstanding restaurants in the downtown area.

Breakfast at Whispering Pines Bed & Breakfast-Dellroy, Oh

Breakfast is a joy at our Ohio Bed and Breakfast on Atwood Lake.  I love the preparation, plating and especially serving it to our hungry morning guests.  Most people are always in a hurry so breakfast is the meal most neglect.  I have guests who will tell me they don't eat breakfast, but they don't leave a speck of food on their plates.  Hmm . . it's nice to be served.

This is one of the many dishes that I serve and it's a beautiful presentation as well as great tasting.  I would like to share this recipe.  You can prepare it the night before, remove it from the refrigerator, bring it to room temperature and pop it in the oven.  I serve this with a side of herb flavored potatoes and fresh fruit.

Ham and Spinach Strata

4 egg whites
4 eggs
1 c. whole milk
2 T. Dijon mustard
1/4 tsp. salt and pepper
1 tsp. minced fresh herbs, your choice of rosemary, basil, thyme, marjoram or tarragon
2 c. egg bread or Italian, cut into 1-inch cubes
1 - 8 oz bag of fresh spinach, wilted
1/2 c. chopped roasted red peppers
1 c. diced good quality ham, smoky flavor compliments the dish
3/4 c. shredded Gruyere cheese

Whisk together the egg whites, eggs and milk in large bowl.  Add mustard, salt and pepper and herbs.  Whisk to combine.  Add the spinach, red peppers, ham and bread cubes and toss well to coat.  Transfer to prepared baking dish and push down to compact.  Cover with foil.  I use a 10 inch pie plate coated lightly with cooking spray.  Bake at 375 for about 40 minutes.  Uncover, sprinkle with cheese and continue baking until the strata is puffed and golden on top, about 15 minutes more.  Let cool for 5 minutes to set.  Cut and serve.

Do you have a favorite savory breakfast dish to share?  If you do I would love to prepare it to serve to our guests.  And I would be happy to name it after you.

Well, why not stay overnight for a romantic ohio getaway and wake up to a delicious breakfast served to you on fine antique china in a beautiful setting overlooking Atwood Lake.  We'll also grind some coffee beans from Larry's Beans, organic, fair trade and outstanding.

Hope to see you soon,
Linda
