Ohio Bed and Breakfast

One of the restaurants we recommend while staying at Whispering Pines Bed and Breakfast is the Lighthouse Bistro.  This restaurant in located on the west end of the lake, near Atwood Lake Park and at Atwood Lake Marina West.  This time of the year is perfect because they have patio dining overlooking the lake.

Their menu is varied with pasta selections, steak options, several seafood entrees and a variety of salads and sandwiches.  You can also relax with a glass of wine or a martini.

We were there the other night and I had the Alfredo in a Pecorino sweet butter cream topped with sauteed shrimp.  Bill ordered the special of the night - a sirloin steak topped with Bleu Cheese sitting on top of a bed of garlic mashed potatoes.  They were both absolutely delicious, and as you can see, the presentation is lovely as well.

The attire is very casual as a lot of boaters will pull into the docks and eat there.  Open everyday, the Lighthouse Bistro would be a perfect choice for your dining experience.

I'll look forward to seeing you soon,

Walking Tour Massillon Ohio

This weekend local historian Margy Vogt, will lead two historic public walking tours in Massillon, one of Massillon’s historic Fourth Street on Saturday, May 22, at 2:00 p.m. and one of downtown Massillon on Sunday, May 23, at 2:00 p.m.

The Historic Fourth Street Walking Tour is a leisurely stroll, which includes stories about former residents and exterior architectural highlights of the town’s grandest old neighborhood, it takes about two hours. Fourth Street is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The houses on Fourth Street, which span more than a century of architectural excellence (1830s to 1930s), were home to Massillon’s entrepreneurs and bankers, to prominent families who hosted President McKinley, and to humanitarians who harbored fugitive slaves.

The Historic Downtown Massillon Walking Tour will be a stroll through the history and architecture of Massillon’s 184-year-old downtown to learn about the canal, streetcars, early businesses, National Register sites, and the people who built the town. Stories will include the fire that destroyed First Methodist Church, human flies, the Washington’s birthday flood, and the airplane that was built in the upper floor of a downtown building.

Why not stay at Whispering Pines Bed and Breakfast and we'll include the $5 fee for the tour.

I'll look forward to seeing you soon,

Mac and Cheese

Tonight I prepared mac and cheese with a delightful twist.  Fire roasted tomatoes, smoky Cheddar cheese, cayenne and scallions with a fantastic result.  This recipe possibly came from my favorite magazine, Bon Apetit.  My husband loved it and I'm sure your family would too.

12 oz bag of elbow macaroni, cooked and drained.  Return to saucepan and keep warm.

1 1/2 c. whipping cream (do not use 1/2 and 1/2 or milk)
1 tsp. Dijon mustard
1/2 tsp. sea salt
1/4 tsp. ground red pepper (cayenne)
8 oz. smoked Cheddar cheese, shredded
2 14.5 oz cans of fire roasted diced tomatoes
1/4 c. sliced scallions
1/3 c. grated Parmesan cheese
1/3 c. plain dry bread crumbs
2 tsp. olive oil

Heat oven to 375 and spray a 13 x 9-inch baking dish.  In a 2 quart saucepan, heat cream, mustard, salt and red pepper to boiling.  Reduce heat and stir in Cheddar with wire whisk until smooth.  Pour sauce over macaroni.  Stir in tomatoes and scallions.  Pour into baking dish.  Stir together Parmesan cheese and bread crumbs and sprinkle over top of macaroni mixture.  Drizzle olive oil on top.

Bake 15-20 miinutes or until edges are bubbly and top is golden brown.

Delicious.

I won't be serving this for breakfast, but I do prepare a delicious breakfast.  Stay overnight and experience breakfast from Whispering Pines.

Hope to see you soon,
Linda

Romantic Ohio Bed and Breakfast and Romantic dinner

Yesterday we spent a delightful day in Canton.  We had a couple of appointments and then did several bed and breakfast related errands.  By late afternoon we were quite hungry and decided to go to the new Gervasi Vineyard and Bistro located right smack dab in the middle of Canton.  This 55 acre property is nestled into a huge body of trees, with a nice size pond and about 5 acres of planted vines.  Their plans are for more vines in the near future.  We have been to Napa Valley and several other wine areas around the country, Gervasi is truly a spectacular place.

The grounds are fantastic.  They have planted trees, shrubs, flowers and set up brick pathways where you can wander the grounds.  There are a couple of patios where they will be serving food later in the summer months.  They also have a building called the marketplace where wine, food items and gifts items are located.  A tasting room and a huge pavilon for outdoor events will soon be available as well.

Back to dinner.  We sat at a table overlooking the pond and it was a beautiful view.  We began with a personal size wine tasting of three wines of our choice.  They were delightful.  We then had a pasta with Lobster served in a light cream sauce.  Bill ordered Tuscan Beef Short Ribs that were perfect, fork tender with a wonderful presentation.  I ordered roasted Lemon Chicken served with Veal Risotto - so good.  Of course we had to finish off with dessert, a pana cotta with fresh berries.

I would recommend this to any of our overnight guests.  It's a short 40 minute drive from Whispering Pines Bed and Breakfast and I know you would thoroughly enjoy your evening.

Hope to see you soon,
Linda
